Grand Champions

Do you worry about your child? Junk food in the schools? Sugary soft drinks? Hours of video games? Excessive TV viewing? Sedentary lifestyle?

If you are concerned, you’re not alone. Childhood weight problems have doubled in the past two decades. Pediatricians are alarmed that adult diseases — diabetes, high cholesterol, hypertension — are now being diagnosed increasingly in kids! The American Academy of Pediatrics targets TV, video games, and sedentary lifestyle as the primary causes of fitness problems in children.

Overweight children are at high risk for low self-esteem, teasing and bullying, and depression which may persist into adulthood.

What can Grand Champions do?

Grand Champions is the only martial arts/fitness program especially designed to address weight and fitness problems in children.

Why can't I just enroll my child in any sports program?

You can enroll your child in any sport or activity, but most are designed for more athletic children. And, with team sports, the more athletic child gets to play, while the less athletic child warms the bench. In Grand Champions, every child is active.

Why is Grand Champions different?

Grand Champions was created by Daryl Altman, MD, a board certified pediatrician and black belt martial arts instructor. Dr. Altman incorporated the recommendations of the American Academy of Pediatrics for the prevention of childhood obesity into a fun, healthful program with all the benefits of a martial arts education. Dr. Altman is aware that many previously sedentary children are uncomfortable or embarrassed joining sports activities with other more active or experienced kids. These children will feel welcome and supported by Grand Champions.

What about good old-fashioned "diet & exercise"?

High intensity exercise programs and diets designed for adults do not work for kids. In fact they may even be dangerous, because they do not take into account the need for physical growth, children's lifestyles, and peer pressure. Plus, they do nothing to address the known causes of children's fitness problems.
